These dedicated people spread the story and keep Aviation History alive through pictures and prose. Our reach to these twenty plus photographers will be multiplied by thousands, or hundreds of thousands by the time their pictures are published, posted or viewed.
On May 23rd, the Cold War Air Museum (CWAM) had the privilege and pleasure of such a group visiting for a sponsored event and dinner. They will have their own event posted on their web sites (along with much better photographs taken with much more expensive equipment). But it was a pleasure to watch them at work, even in the rain and catch a few quick photos of the photo takers with my trusty smart phone.
Event planning and co-ordination with Airport management allowed them limited, but close up access for some special picture taking. That is an advantage of an airport and aviation history oriented community such as ours. The only element not fully on board with today’s events was the weather.
The "Cavanaugh Caribou Came to CWAM" for the Photographer's Pictographic Pleasure. Making the 20 mile trip from the North to the South of the DFW Metroplex seemed as if it might not happen with Torrential rain and Tornadic Winds passing through the area earlier. Our thanks to the Cavanaugh Museum for helping to "make the day" for these Hunters of History.
We are lucky to be in an area that keeps so much aviation history alive. This weekend the Dallas area saw one of the biggest gatherings of flying WWII aircraft we have seen in a long, long time.

Several of the Cold War Area Museum Directors are also Life Members of the Commemorative Air Force (CAF) and several of the CJ's from the CWAM group flew to the event.
In addition to the many aircraft we are used to seeing, others flew in, to help attract attention and support for the creation of a new area aviation museum and headquarters for the CAF.
These CAF aircraft, based in this, and other areas, have all been beautifully restored and maintained. If the new facility is built, some will base here and others may come for display on a rotating basis.
Families came and children got to see and touch a part of history that their grandparents (or great-grandparents) may have been part of. Rides were also available in many of the planes. All of the aircraft on display were flown to the event.
Our hat is off as always to Charlie Wood, who has helped co-ordinate so many joint events for the CAF and Cold War Air Museum at Lancaster. Now a National Officer for the Commemorative Air Force, Charlie was, as usual, actively recruiting new members in support of keeping these wonderful machines on display and flying.
If all that is being discussed comes to pass, Dallas Executive Airport, a few miles from where the CAF/DFW and CWAM museums are currently located may gain a new facility, a home for permanent and rotating display of these fine historic aircraft.
During the Cold War, air shows and "civilian" air race competitions were an opportunity for national interests to be displayed in a highly competitive atmosphere, sans weapons. In contrast to that era, all of these teams appear supported by commercial, not national, interests. But it is still fun for the spectators to root for their home teams.
The Texas Motor Speedway is a unique venue for this event. The Speedway normally hosts NASCAR automotive races and was built "Texas sized" to reflect the public interest and following of those events. The speedway is capable of seating and supporting more than 128,000 visitors. And a hotel provides spectacular views of race events. The extensive parking area is filled with buses, motor homes and campers on multi-day events.
During the event, spectators could watch the planes flying in front of them or watch the action on a giant screen across the field. The screen switched between cameras inside the aircraft, views from cameras mounted on the aircraft and views from cameras in the stadium and a helicopter above. The display also showed times, speeds and rankings of the aircraft/pilots. The bright flash of Texas sun shown on the big screen behind the pilots head is a reminder of another obstacle the pilots faced during the race.
Entry through the checkered pylon gates was followed by an immediate turn to the left towards the first red pylon. Aircraft had to make entry under 200 knots, most entered on a slight decent to add speed after entry.

Clipping a pylon adds a time penalty. The top of the checkered entry pylon can just be seen behind this aircraft's tail as the pylon begins to collapse. Crews on the ground could repair and re-inflate a pylon in a matter of minutes.
The course is short and fast. After passing the first red pylon the aircraft passes in front of the stands. The jumbo display in this shot is showing a slightly out of sync view from a camera mounted on the aircraft's tail. The speed of action is intense and you can watch the moving plane or the stationary screen, but not both at the same time. The slight lag in attitude shown on screen, compared to the aircraft in flight, was only noticeable looking at this shot after the fact.
Continuing down course, the aircraft goes vertical to reverse direction. In this shot, the right pylon of this pair was hit on the first Lap and is laying on the ground. Between heats, a crew repaired and re-inflated it in about two minutes. The spectators lining the hotel top floor balcony must have a great view.
In addition to featured exhibits, static displays and flights of historic aircraft, a new event this year was Cockpit-Fest, USA.
Cockpit and Simulator enthusiasts came from as far as California. The Cockpit-Fest group enjoyed seeing the aircraft flying and on display, and the public enjoyed seeing the cockpits and trying the sims.
Museum President Phil Davis is pictured below after having made several landings in this B52 cockpit and simulator. Like many of the other cockpits and simulators, it had outstanding graphics with full computer tie-in to the original flight controls. Phil couldn't resist the comment that "it flies like a big Ercoupe". Make that a really, really, big Ercoupe.

While some of the displays focused on the accuracy and detail of actual cockpits, others focused on development of the supporting electronics. The reader is left to guess which ones had the most comfortable "pilot" seating.

The Cockpit-Fest group gave out awards in various categories. The group seems to be very dynamic and supportive of its members.

Trailering and transport of these valuable exhibits is no easy task. At the beginning and end of the event many hours were spent setting up and removing the displays and sims. And of course CWAM volunteers had to come early and stay late to move aircraft in and out of Hanger One both for Cockpit-Fest and Warbirds on Parade. With arrangements waiting for the F-15 to be picked up, it seemed only fitting for it to face off with the Mig-21 while spending the night.

A successful event for all and hopefully a bigger event for next year.

At the North end of the field, the Commemorative Air Force, long established in Texas, brings in many of the finest examples of WWII aircraft remaining in flying condition.
Like other historic organizations, the CAF and CWAM now constantly compete with the internet for the hearts and minds of the public. But smart phones and flat screens simply don't compare with the reality of touching and seeing these aircraft in person and talking to the veterans and volunteers that flew them and keep them flying today.
The event started early with aircraft flying in from around the state and volunteers arriving to help, and soon the public began arriving in hopes of beating the heat of the late afternoon Texas sun.
The Cold War Air Museum is also located on the airport at Lancaster. CWAM has many flying and static aircraft from the post-WWII era. The two Museums compliment and coordinate with each other in support of this annual event.
Although fewer people seem to come in person since the advent of the internet, the sights, sounds and smells of in-person reality continue to thrill and excite both young and old. Hopefully this young man is dreaming of a future flying or designing the generations of aircraft to come.
The Thunder Over Cedar Creek Airshow benefits the Cedar Creek Veterans Foundation, a 501(c)(3) group founded to provide support for the physical and emotional recovery and rehabilitation of
wounded, injured and disabled military personnel and veterans with a
focus on those individuals residing in and organizations serving the
Northeast Texas region.

CWAM associates have contributed their time and support to this event for a number of years and look forward to this event annually.

As with every event, a lot of Planning, Preparation and Plain old hard work goes into getting there.

The size of the MI-24 requires attention to clearance. The full pivoting nose wheel allows the tail to be swung clear of (or into) nearby structures, vehicles and equipment. Plane guards help keep the tug driver aware of obstacles he can't see.

Additional ramp space under construction can be seen at the left. Projected to be ready by the upcoming August 30th Warbirds on Parade event, the new space allows the MI-24 to go directly to a nearby staging area.

After towing the MI-24 to an area clear of the small planes that frequent this growing DFW regional airport (KLNC), the bird can be fueled for the short flight to Cedar Creek.
As with every July 4th, the Commemorative Air Force DFW Wing, also located at Lancaster was also evolving aircraft in support of North Texas events.
Although the resolution of independence was effectively adopted by the
Second Continental Congress on July 2nd, 1776, our founding fathers felt
that it was important to draft a document that more fully explained the basis and reasoning for their action.

After debate and revision, the
resulting Declaration of Independence was adopted on July 4, 1776, the day we now celebrate every year. Drafted over two hundred years ago, it is a reminder today of the reasons, rights, wrongs and lofty goals for which our country was founded. A reading of this famous document can be played below.
Throughout the Cold War and even today, conflict continues to remain throughout the world. Some might say it is part of human nature. At the Cold War Air Museum, we cannot solve the world's problems or change the nature of man. But as a museum, we can help preserve and present the lessons of history that might help some future student or leader better understand the world in which we live.

Have a safe and happy 4th! Tomorrow the MI-24 will be attending the Thunder Over Cedar Creek
airshow.
With the transmission back in place, the turbine engines have been reinstalled. As with the transmission, the bright colors on the engine components help give the bird a "like new" appearance as it goes back together. But the colors are only a small expression of the work and attention to detail given to the process.

It seems like all aircraft (especially helicopters) are required to have one or more tight spaces where something has to be checked or connected. Even with access panels removed long and skinny arms and fingers are often desirable and sometimes required. With the intake preheat not yet installed on the right engine, a moment of such "tight squeeze concentration" was captured above.
This front view shows one of the specialized pieces of standard field equipment, a ladder-bridge, used to access the front of the engine compartment over the nose of the aircraft.

The four forward facing air intakes are prominent in this view. The center square opening (where a head is inserted above) is covered by a grilled panel after work is completed. Left and right of the square opening are the turbine intakes and the large round opening on top feeds the radiator assemblies in the transmission compartment.
After the start of a dark and dreary rainy day (somewhat of a rarity here in sunny Texas), the rain stopped and the sun came out so we were able to open the hanger doors and remount the transmission on #214 (shown here with #213 in the background).

The fuselage of 214 has been completely stripped and repainted. After years and years of service this transmission compartment has not been this clean and shiny since it was at the factory (and maybe not even then).

After an emergency call to get the venerable forklift into operation (a vertical lift beast of its own kind), the transmission was rigged for placement under the watchful eye of museum directors and volunteers.

Of course like all good things helicopter, the transmission could not simply be "dropped" into place. After achieving near perfect vertical and angular alignment, the twin turbine drive shafts must be guided through tight bulkheads into the turbine compartments while at the same time the control rods, cables and connections are guarded or guided into position. With a generous application of attention and a few words of persuasion, the transmission was soon in place.

As the sun sets over the Texas prairie a transmission once again sits atop #214. The persnickety drive shaft for the left turbine is visible through the bulkhead in this photo illustrating the place, mate and "slide" 3D puzzle referenced in the photos above.

As #214 progresses back into service, we hope to provide a new series of restoration posts as before.
This is a small but growing show put on by the CAF's Coyote Squadron. We performed our 2 ship Cold War Attack demo with the MI-24 and L-39. The CAF Blastards were there to provide us with awesome pyrotechnics that really help bring our show together. We hope to bring more multi-aircraft routines to the airshow circuit in the future.
On Saturday we flew a two-ship Russian attack demo with Mi-24 Bord 118 and L-39 Bord 107, and on Sunday a single Hind demo. Both included a full compliment of pryo courtesy of the CAF Blastards. After we arrived in Temple on Friday the Colling's foundation flew their Huey creating some very interesting pictures. Special thanks to Beth Jenkins for inviting us, along with Kevin Hong and Timothy Pruitt for the photos.
The Hind was on static display for the day while the sky was filled with the likes of the US Army Golden Knights and the US Air Force B-1 Lancer bomber. We would like to thank the men and women serving our nation at Dyess Air Force Base and Dave Stubbington for the photos.
This also happened to be Lt Col Pete Coz's first full airshow display at the controls of the Mi-24. He flew an excellent display that was able to excite the crowd and show the full power of the Hind.

We would like to send a special thanks to The CAF Highland Lakes Squadron for hosting us, The Blastards for providing us with awesome pyro, and Ronnie Sethman for showing us some true Hill Country Hospitality.

The following photographs are provided courtesy of Ivan Voukadinov, who made the trip from Chicago for the event. Ivan is from Bulgaria, where his uncle was a Bulgarian Air Force pilot who flew our Bord 022 during its military career.

Photographers and movie makers refer to the time that straddles sunrise and sunset as "Golden Hour" because the natural lighting has a certain glow to it.

15 minutes after sunset, the MiG-23 was taxied into position on the runway and the afterburner was lit for approximately 3.5 seconds. The initial afterburner ignition is the most impressive because of the sheer volume of raw fuel that is sprayed into the tail pipe. The MiG-23 consumes approximately 2 gallons of Jet-A per second at max afterburner.

After slowing down and leaving the runway, the wings were swept to the 72° position, giving the Flogger its signature "go fast" look.

The MiG-23's appearance is even more menacing after dark. Taxi lighting consists of illumination on both sides of the aircraft. The landing configuration consists of illuminating only the larger light on the port side of the aircraft as Soviet pilots were taught to "look left" during landing.

The MiG-23 was the first Soviet design that took cockpit ergonomics into strong consideration and the internal lighting is particularly well thought out.

Even sitting still the MiG-23 looks like it's going Mach 2.35.
Even with the best of intentions, there sometimes is simply not enough time in the day to do everything a busy person wants to do. With the price of Jet fuel high and the economy low, several such projects have been offered or donated to the Museum.
Here, a set of L-29 wings is being moved by hand. Approaching a downhill section on the ramp, Homer stretches his legs to stay ahead of the rollers. Tales from Eastern block crews that worked on these aircraft contain numerous anecdotes about maintenance in countries and on bases, where equipment we take for granted was not always available.
The "mature" generation at the Museum watched as those aircraft and their history disappeared forever. Thus we appreciate the value of rescuing and recovering aircraft from "our" era for future generations to enjoy.

One of them was adding dataplates (labels) to the panel and matching everything together in the new Pilot Operating Handbook (POH).

Jon, the detail oriented member of the group, studied the panels and requirements to send the necessary dimensions and details to the engraver.

The report for this week is; the POH update is nearly complete and the dataplates are on their way back from the engravers.
When the R4D from the sister museum on the field developed maintenance issues, the Mi-24 gallantly filled the vacant spot at the Coulter field airshow.
