Warbirds on Parade!, Saturday Sept 4th

Come visit us this Saturday!

This Saturday, September 4th, the Cold War Air Museum will be participating with aircraft flying and on display along with the Commemorative Air Force DFW wing.

Many more of our aircraft, including the MiG-21 and MiG-23 will be on static display with CAF aircraft as well as helicopters and armor Ft Hood. A Blackhawk, Chinook, Bradley fighting vehicle and M1 "Abrams" tank are expected.

Our UH-1B, 62-1890, a veteran aircraft in need of restoration will be on special display. Come help raise funds to restore this veteran aircraft to flying condition.

Event Pictures - Cold War Air Museum CJ6A's

Coverage of the Cold War Air Museum aircraft at the 9/05 event continues with pictures of the Nanchang CJ-6A's that flew at the event. The CJ's complimented the CAF aircraft and our jet and helicopter displays.

It's always a pleasure for Miles to fly up and join us at these events. His CJ, Bord 69 is a beautiful example of the type. Clicking on the photo will enlarge it to show more details of the plane and the ground displays below it.

Kevin, our intrepid photographer friend, couldn't pass up the chance to go out with the two Cj's while they did some air work. The reflections from the tinted plex give Jon a "Halo" as they taxi out for takeoff.

The CJ has classic lines and its "round" engine makes classic noises, just right for air shows. Allthough the CJ's are distinctly different from the Russian Yak-18, they are frequently called Yak's in the airshow circuit because of a similarity of design. The two types, Yaks and CJ's often fly together. The nose wheel, seen in trail below the fuselage does not fully retract by design. The wheel extending slightly below the fuselage will roll, reducing damage if the student forgets to extend the gear on landing.

Once clear of the airport area, Jon cleared a practice area and the aircraft began some turns so the photgrapher could get some aerial shots.

The CJ shows its classic lines in all profiles.

After giving Kevin the opportunity to get some photographs, the planes head back to the field.

Event pictures - Cold War Air Museum Jets

Coverage of the Cold War Air Museum aircraft at the 9/05 event continues with pictures of the jet aircraft furnished by the museum. The jets complimented the CAF aircraft and our Mi-24 and Mi-2. See a prior post for pictures of the Mi-2 flying during the event.

The Mig-21 made its first public appearance along with the L-29 and L-39 jets that have flown frequently at Lancaster,

Several platforms allowed visitors to look into the cockpits of the trainers.

Moving the aircraft into position and returning them to the museum at the end of the day was an "all-hands" job.

It turned out that the tow bar we had anticipated using for the Mig21 did not fit. An alternate rig allowed the arcraft to be moved from one end of the airport to the other.

Final placement of the Mig was by hand.

At the end of the day, everything that was moved out for display was returned to the Museum's home base.

Event Pictures Continued - CAF and B24

Continuing our coverage of the 9/05 event.

The Commerative Air Force (CAF), DFW wing has co-ordinated this annual event for a number of years. The Cold War Air Museum is pleased to work with the CAF to help host this fine event.

The CAF hangar served as the focal point for visitors and displays.

This year's attendance exceeded that of prior years. This aerial shot in the morning shows some of the activity that went on and expanded throughout the day.The Cold War Air Museum relocated their Mi24 Hind helicopter, Mi2 Hoplite helicopter, Mig21 Mongol fighter as well as our L29 and L39 Delfin and Albatross trainers to the CAF ramp for the event. This helped with crowd control and created a dense and interesting series of aircraft displays when combined with the CAF aircraft.

A highlight of the event was the arrival of the B24. With only two currently flying in the U.S., this was a standout event for this show.

There was always a crowd around the B24 and every time it flew, more people arrived.

The B24 flew frequently during the event and the sight and sound was awesome.

Hats off to Charlie who made it all happen. As wing commander of the CAF group and a generally all-around great guy, we appreciate having the opportunity to work with him.

Warbirds on Parade - Event Pictures, Mi-2

We have been waiting to post the after event follow up from the 9/5 Warbirds on Parade event until one of our friends, Kevin Hong, a professional photographer, had a chance to send us some of his pictures. The Cold War Air Museum, Mi-2 was a hit at the Lancaster event. People lined up to see the inside and learn more about the aircraft.

Operating from the field next to the ramp, the bird looks just as at home as it would on the Russian steppes.

With the B24, the signature aircraft of the event in the background, all the right sights and sounds were on hand for the visitors.

Saturday, September 5th, the Cold War Air Museum will be participating with aircraft flying and on display along with the Commemorative Air Force DFW wing. The airport will also be hosting other aircraft and events.

Many of our aircraft including the Mig-21 will be on static display next to the CAF hangar so that all activities for the public will be concentrated towards the North end of the field. In addition to the parking areas shown on the link below, there will be additional parking in designated areas on the main ramp during the event.
