Model Aircraft on Display

The Cold War Air Museum brings together volunteers and associates with diverse interests to create displays and activities of interest to the public. Aircraft models at the museum compliment the full size aircraft displayed and flown by museum associates.

With one display case already full, the museum would welcome the donation of more display cases to extend the collection and add other articles of interest.

Some of the models displayed are of aircraft far to large to be displayed at the current museum location. Adding such models helps museum visitors relate the aircraft at the museum to other aircraft of the cold war era.

Models also help display the many colors and configurations found on aircraft in the field.

Sean, one of our volunteers, especially enjoys creating models for the museum. We appreciate his ongoing efforts in this area of interest at the Cold War Air Museum.

A Case for Models

The Cold War Air Museum has a number of volunteers who enjoy models and model aircraft construction.

This display case, one of several recently donated to the Museum, now houses a number of models of various cold war era aircraft, most of which have been brought in by our most prolific volunteer modeler, Sean.

As time goes on, more model aircraft will be added and it is likely that display groupings will be re-arranged by era and aircraft scale.

The Mil-8 and MiG-15 are examples of aircraft that we may eventually acquire or display. Later model Soviet aircraft rarely make their way into the "States".

The display case is located in a hallway adjoining the main Museum display area. The hallway is well lined with windows for viewing. Reflections counterpose the models on display with the real aircraft on display.

An earlier post told of the intention to create model versions of all of our aircraft on display. That is still an ongoing project.

Museum Model or Model Museum?

One of our volunteers likes to build model aircraft, so we've had a lot of discussion about building models of the museum aircraft. The models could be used as a miniature display of the museum, to assist with museum layout, to evaluate paint schemes or just for fun!

This model was built by an associate several years ago, after riding in L29, "bord DN". It was carefully painted and detailed to match the real thing!

The paint and detail compare favorably with the real thing!

Painting a model is a lot of work, but painting a full size airplane is even more work and expense.
